THE AI INSTITUTE / RESEARCH FOR LEADERS

Make AI Safety Notices Reach the Business

A supplier’s report to a regulator is not your response plan. Agree what customers will be told and who will act.

OUR VIEW

Buyers need an actionable safety-notification route from their AI suppliers to the people who can change operations. Regulatory reporting and customer notification serve different purposes; one should not be assumed to deliver the other.

Key points

What this paper means for leaders

  1. Separate regulator reporting from customer notification.
  2. Define which supplier findings require an operational response.
  3. Route notices through resellers to a named business owner.
  4. Test the route without waiting for a real incident.

A report somewhere is not a warning here

Your AI supplier discovers that an important safeguard no longer works as expected. It may need to investigate, inform an authority and limit access to a model. Your business still needs to know whether its customer service, internal assistant or automated workflow is affected. Those are different information needs, with different recipients.

The Institute’s recommendation is to establish the customer-notification route before expanding reliance on the service. Ask what triggers a notice, what it will contain, how it reaches you through intermediaries and who can suspend affected work. A promise to comply with applicable law does not answer those operating questions.

This is not a reason to demand every technical detail of every investigation. Some information could expose people, compromise security or prejudice an inquiry. The objective is enough reliable information to make a proportionate decision, followed by updates as the supplier learns more.
