THE AI INSTITUTE / RESEARCH FOR LEADERS
Your AI Agent Must Know What to Forget
Persistent agents need current information, not an unlimited past. Test how they retire old facts before widening their responsibilities.
Before expanding a persistent AI agent's responsibilities, prove that outdated information can leave its working context without destroying records the organisation must retain.
Key points
What this paper means for leaders
- Treat retained context as an operating dependency, not a convenience.
- Test correction, withdrawal and isolation alongside recall.
- Distinguish working memory, archived records and trained model knowledge.
- Expand only when the agent uses the current evidence for the right task.
The decision
Memory creates a second maintenance job
Before giving an AI agent a continuing responsibility, ask how it stops using information that is no longer true. A changed customer instruction, an expired price or a superseded plan can matter as much as the information the agent successfully remembers. The operating question is not how much history it can store. It is whether yesterday’s context can quietly govern today’s action.
Meta’s 29 September announcement extends Muse into small-business work through additional skills and connections to business tools. The company describes proactive assistance and approval before publishing, sending or spending. Those are supplier descriptions, not independent evidence of business reliability. They nevertheless make persistent, connected assistance a concrete buying decision rather than a distant research prospect. 1
The Institute’s recommendation is to add a memory-change test before expanding such a service. Show that a correction reaches the places where work is decided, that unrelated teams do not receive it, and that necessary historical records remain distinguishable from current instructions.
